For a typically Austrian experience in the heart of Vienna’s old town in a unique setting, look no further than Zwolf Apostelkeller – the Twelve Apostles’ Cellar. Located underground in a cellar dating back to the 14th century, the restaurant specialises in traditional Viennese recipes and wines, proudly showcasing what the city has to offer. The general ambience of the place is reason to visit alone, with impressive vaulted ceilings in the colossal cellar, wooden tables, attentive waiters and locals singing folk songs to the sound of a tavern band, taking requests as the likes of The Beautiful Blue Danube fill the air. In terms of atmosphere, this is as typically Austrian as it gets.
The food and wine is traditional fare too, serving excellent Austrian wines like the famous white Grüner Veltliner and red Zweigelt. After you settle in, consider a Fiakergulasch (beef goulash with sausages and fried egg) or classic Wiener Schnitzel – we found the Fiakergulasch to be particularly rich, a house specialty. They also do a good selection of desserts but we recommend that you go to Café Hawelka nearby and try one of their buchteln if you want to extend your truly Viennese evening. This is ultimately a huge place with a unique stuck-in-time atmosphere to soak in the city with a glass of wine and Fiakergulasch.
