Nicknamed ‘La Grassa’ (the fat) for centuries, it’s no surprise that Bologna has a serious foodie tradition that it’s famed for, even by very competitive Italian standards. Osterias, trattorias, bars, restaurants and more foodie outlets dot its dust-red porticoed streets, each promising a delicious escape from the sun. One of the most delicious is Trattoria da Me, a short 10 minute walk away from the city’s Piazza Maggiore.
If you’re just walking in on the hope of a seat, don’t be surprised if you can’t get one. It’s a very popular restaurant among locals and tourists alike thanks to a reputation for great service and traditional food in classical Bolognese surrounds, so it’s a good idea to book at least a week in advance. If you’re fortunate enough to get a seat, we highly recommend the tagliatelle al ragù (you won’t find spaghetti bolognese in Bologna, but this is one of the city’s most famous dishes) and the tortellini (another regional speciality), followed by beef cheek. The tortellini at Trattoria da Me, with a veal filling cooked in regional Lambrusco, is arguably one of the best gastronomic experiences available in the city. If you’ve got room, finish off with the intriguingly refreshing apple and celery sorbet and a glass of Albana dessert wine or take a stroll to the nearby Cremeria della Grada for superb gelato.
Keep in mind that this restaurant prides itself on its seasonal produce, so if you go our recommendations may not be available, but rest assured that you’ll be in the good hands of the talented chef whatever you’ll have.
