Located just on the other side of the Sintra train station, it’s easy to miss Restaurante Metamorphosis, although it is not one to miss for hungry travellers to the charming Portuguese city from Lisbon. Unlike many other restaurants closer to the centre, Restaurante Metamorphosis’s menu isn’t just attractive for its classic Portuguese culinary choices, but also for its price. Naturally, when we visited Sintra and needed a powerful lunch to get us through the physically strenuous hikes to come, we had to pop in.
We were immediately seen to and cool down with a glass of water before selecting alheira sausages (a bread and chicken sausage that was reportedly invented to save Jews during the Inquisition, when not having sausages would be seen as suspect). They are delicious and soon followed by a couple of Francesinha sandwiches (8.50 EUR). These sandwiches typically come from Porto and are filled with ham, sausages, egg and cheese, covered with a beery, cheesy tomato sauce like a very naughty lasagne.
Regrettably, we didn’t have room for dessert and digest with another drink before setting off for Sintra. For our guide to Sintra, read more here.
