Osteria dell’Orsa is a longstanding cultural institution in Bologna and has been a hub for the lively student culture for decades, starting out as counter-culture punk rock establishment. Today, it is known for its good food, reasonable prices, good location and vibrant atmosphere, and is a great place to get acquainted with the city’s culture and food. It’s a laid-back affair at Osteria dell’Orsa, osterias generally referring to establishments that are less formal than trattorias or ristorantes, so there’s no need – or option – to book ahead. It’s not uncommon to find people there whiling away their afternoons and evenings over a good drink and hearty food, playing card games with their friends.

Turn up and you’ll be quickly seen to with table service, with seating inside and out. The osteria sells several traditional Bolognese dishes, so if you want to try something local, get the tagliatelle al ragù, gramigna or the tortellini, which are excellent and reasonably priced. If you don’t want a pasta dish, look for their cold meat and cheese platters, with squaqquerone and mortadella being traditional for the area. Their drinks selection is also rather reasonable with a choice of typical wines and beers available.
