Hungarian cuisine can be very meat heavy, which poses something of a barrier to vegetarian and vegan visitors to the country when wanting to explore its food traditions. This is where the likes of Napfényes in Budapest come in, showcasing Hungarian and international cuisine that’s not only entirely vegan but also caters to range of other dietary requirements like low-carb and lactose-free diets. Oh, and they’re a bakery too.
On our visit to Napfényes, we were quickly seated and waited upon by extremely friendly staff. We began with a couple of homemade low-carb lemonades as we pored over the extensive menu. We decide on a firm Hungarian favourite to start, cold sour cherry soup. While this may sound odd, the tangy taste of the sour cherries mixed with sweet creaminess of the soup itself makes this well worth a try. Next, we decide to share a colossal mixed grill, featuring fried non-dairy cheese, grilled tofu cutlets, grilled seitan cutlets, home-made falafel, oat fritters, breaded tofu cheese, polenta and a hefty portion of vegetables and dips on the side.
Napfényes is an incredibly accommodating and welcoming restaurant that prides itself on its huge range of vegan dishes and bakes, but more importantly, their passion shows in their food.
