The Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna (or MAMbo) is one of Bologna’s best cultural assets, dedicated to exhibiting experimental art in Italy following the end of the Second World War, with seasonal exhibitions that promote cutting-edge artists and a permanent exhibition that documents the modern history of Italian art. Located in a former bread bakery, the museum’s pieces range from the thought-provoking to the bizarre, using a variety of mediums. Particularly notable are a piece featuring daily photographs of one artist’s faeces, videos of Marina Abramovic’s performance art and Renato Guttoso’s The Funeral of Togliatti.
The collections explore ideology, innovation and nature, provoking emotions from disgust to amusement and helping to educate visitors about the history of the city’s cultural movements through art. The café attached to the museum is also worth a visit for a cup of coffee, drinks and snacks, with good food, good service and reasonable prices.
Admission is 6 EUR. It’s closed on Mondays, and is open every other day from 10am to 6.30pm, apart from Thursday, where it’s open until 10pm. For more information, click here.
