If you love meat, you’ll love Kantýna – a popular laid-back communal dining restaurant in Prague’s trendy New Town. What makes Kantýna unique is its butcher’s section at the front of the restaurant, where diners can select whatever cut or delicacy they like from the counter and ask how they’d like it to be cooked – they also sell you the meat to take away. If this sounds a little intimidating to you, then they also have a canteen where you can get ready-cooked food like potato pancakes (which are beautiful), sausages and brisket. Opposite this is a bar selling coffees, lemonades, soft drinks and of course beer.
It can be a little overwhelming at first if you don’t know what’s going on, but all you need to do when you head in is ask one of the workers on the till to give you a card, which you’ll hand to vendors when you order your food, and then you settle up for a reasonable price at the end. There are options to reserve a table in the evening, but generally it’s okay to just grab a seat anywhere. First of all, we recommend going up to the butcher’s counter – we ordered an incredible sirloin steak with bone marrow butter and mushroom sauce. We were then given a bone with a number on it for a waiter to later give it to us when it had finished cooking. This steak was astounding and was enough to feed two, with the succulent garlicky bone marrow butter highly recommended to those who haven’t tried it. We then tried to brisket, sausages and potato pancakes from the counter, followed by a couple of good beers to wash it down.
