Valencia’s Old Town is one of the largest in Spain, with its narrow streets filling with life and music in the evenings. In Spain, people eat relatively late by many other cultural standards, which works in the Old Town’s favour, allowing you to sit down with a glass of local wine and people watching while indulging in the Spanish art of tapear, which is just me pretentiously saying ‘eating tapas’. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the Old Town, with the trendier restaurants closer to Ruzafa, but there are still many good places closer to the older centre, one of them being El Rall.

Situated in a beautiful plaza and with an expansive menu of local dishes and tapas nibbles, El Rall is a spot we can very much recommend in the city centre. It can get pretty busy, as we found, so book ahead if for a large party. Luckily, we managed to get a table. After some sangria, we order a selection of tapas, including patatas bravas (spicy potatoes), a plate of jamon, chorizo and manchego, croquetas, Argentinian sausage and albondigas. All of which were fantastic, but the two best were the melt-in-the-mouth Argentinian style sausage and the platter of meats and cheese – the waiters standing nearby, expertly carving the ham.

We finish with a cheesecake as we take in the atmosphere of the lively Valencian night, a great end to a day. For our guide to Valencia’s Old Town, read more here.
